About Biochar

Biochar is made by heating biomass to a temperature of 400 – 800°C under the absence of oxygen. The process used is called pyrolysis.

What’s is the difference between biochar and charcoal? Biochar is not used as fuel and generally measures 0-30mm in any dimension, the best Biochar is created from mixed hardwoods. We don’t add mycorrhizae or fertilizers to our biochar, as soils harbour different species of mycorrhizae and if its used in feedstock you are guaranteed that its 100% pure.

Biochar can be made from almost any organic material such as Crop residues, manures, and wood. We only use British sustainably sourced wood that has travelled less than 50 miles.

Oxford Wood Biochar is pure and created from known sources that have been certified by the department of agriculture, so you know what we sell is kind to the environment. We guarantee that you will get the best Biochar because we create the best Charcoal and Oxford Biochar is a direct bi-product of our Charcoal process.

Straight’ biochars (non-enriched) are most suited for aeration of soils which are at risk of periodic flooding or ‘problem soils’ which are too dense or poorly drained..
